An alternator is an alternating current (AC) generator. It is lighter, more efficient and more dependable than a generator. An alternator not only charges your battery so you can start your car but, it powers everything else in the vehicle while it's running. When your alternator is charging your voltage regulator should maintain a voltage between 13.5 and 15.5 volts, you may have a problem with your alternator if the voltage regulator on your dash reads lower than 13 volts while the vehicle is running.
