The ignition systems job is to create a timed spark and distribute it to the engine cylinders. The ignition system also serves the function of turning the engine on and off. Modern vehicles have computer-controlled ignition systems. There are 2 main types of systems. Distributor Ignition (DI) and Electronic Ignition (EI) also called Distributorless or Coil Over Plug (COP). The DI System uses a distributor and spark plug cables. All ignition system types use a battery, ignition switch, coil, a switching device and spark plugs.
