Radiators are designed with either of two flow patterns, down flow or cross flow. A radiator has a top and bottom or side tanks that are attached to a core that contains tubes with air fins attached to them. Coolant circulates through the radiator tubes when air travels across the fins, it cools the coolant passing through the tubes. You should inspect your radiator for leaks and bent or crushed fins. Look for obstructions to air flow like bugs, or debris which can be washed out with water from the engine side of the radiator to prevent overheating.
