Shock absorbers are designed to resist or damp out excess and unwanted motion in the suspension of your vehicle. When a spring is compressed it absorbs energy. During spring rebound, this energy is released. The first cycle is followed by more compression/rebound cycles called oscillations. Shock absorbers damp out the excess motion. Signs of bad shocks include excessive body motion, road wander, a harsh ride, suspension bottoming and poor braking. A bad shock absorber on one side of the vehicle can make the whole vehicle to feel weird.
